The Sea, the Limitless Skies

Maps of North West Norfolk (OS Landranger 132) were bias-plaited to create “The Sea, the Limitless Skies”. The piece takes its title from a phrase by Norfolk based author Raffaella Barker.

As the maker cut, folded and plaited the maps in the form of boots, glimpses of placenames recalled memories of seaside holidays – the crunch of ice on sand at Holkham one new year’s day, following the footpath over the saltmarsh to Cley and the sound of sea on shingle, walking along the boardwalk to Brancaster past abandoned boats and tractors, crab sandwiches at Overstrand, heading home with happy, tired dogs after a day at the beach – and, always, “the sea, the limitless skies”…

Sarah won prizes in the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers’ Basketry of the Year competition in 2017 and 2018, had work in “Basketry: Function & Ornament” (Ruthin Craft Centre, 2019), was a Craft Scotland Compass Emerging Maker in 2019, and on Applied Arts Scotland’s “Shift Canada” programme in 2019–21.
